Where to buy ethical underwear? I bet you never thought about whether or not the contents of your underwear drawer were sustainably and ethically made. I certainly didn’t. Or if you had, where in the world do you go to buy it? Often times the daily essentials are overlooked when shopping ethically. You mean my underwear isn’t already made in a happy factory while taking the environment into consideration? Nope, I guess not.
Enter WAMA Underwear. WAMA Underwear is an online company bringing to the world organic hemp underwear. Hemp? Yes, you read that right. Hemp. Honestly, when I think of hemp clothing, I imagine the cliche “dirty” hippy that doesn’t shave and smells like patchouli (which I have to admit is more or less me in winter when shaving is rendered unnecessary by long-sleeves and pants… minus the patchouli). Well, WAMA is here to bust that stereotype out of our minds!
Hemp is naturally antibacterial which for us ladies is great. Their website also states that hemp has anti-odor properties, is breathable, and becomes softer the more you wash. They have a blog on their website that has a great article discussing why hemp is a better choice than cotton. If you would like to read, I will link here.
How do they fit?
Their size options range for women from XS to 2XL in all styles and S to 3XL in all men’s styles. The sizing I would say runs on the smaller side. My order consisted of the thong, hipster, and bikini styles. I had to return the bikinis as they were too small for me, creating the very undesirable 4 cheeks look. I ordered a size medium ( I am 5’3” and ~ 130 lb and a little fuller in the bum area for reference) in all styles and while the hipster styles do cover me bum without cutting into it, they are a tad bit snug. That being said, both the thong and hipster styles did stretch out a bit as the day went on. I don’t think is a problem unless the fit is a little too big to start with.
The thong style is my favorite! They are the best thongs I have ever worn ( I am not exaggerating)! I ended up exchanging the bikinis for another pack of the thongs. They are flattering, comfortable, and I really like how the back of the thong had a wider strip of material than other thong styles I have worn. The material I would say does feel a little “rougher” than 100% cotton underwear, but by no means does it actually feel rough. They are soft and feel of good, sturdy quality that will last a long time.
How do they look?
They do not have a lot of colors to choose from. All of the styles come only in black except for women’s hipsters and men’s boxer briefs which have a green and yellow shade option. I love the black myself. You can never go wrong with classic black underthings… unless maybe you’re wearing a white bottom. Hopefully, they will come out with a nude option in the future.
The hipsters are a little cheeky with men’s briefs detailing on the front that I think is really cute. The bikinis as I said were too small and just weren’t really my favorite style. I generally prefer a hipster cut to a bikini to start with. I would really love to try the boy short style which as I am writing this is out of stock 🙁 ! It looks like they would be the perfect length.
They wash and dry perfectly well while maintaining their shape. The thongs do not get all twisty and curl up after washing and become an unrecognizable clingy ball of frilly fabric like some other brands *cough victoria’s secret *cough… sorry, I have a cold. They are easily smoothed back into their original shape and shrink back to their original size/fit after washing/drying.

Would I Recommend?
I love my WAMA underwear. I feel good wearing them both because they are comfy and because I know they were made with high ethical standards and with less negative environmental impact.
The fit and durability are some of the biggest selling factors for me. These are the only thongs I will wear now! I am excited to try more of their products and see what they come out with in the future!
