Monthly Fun Goals

Monthly Fun Goals

‘We should do that.’ A simple enough phrase, right? Well, I think it has become a phrase we use too much with too little action taken after those words are spoken. All too often we see, read, or hear about something that we want to try or experience. We get a burst of excitement thinking about the new endeavor and imagine how much fun it would be. That burst however quickly dissipates and then somehow that fun new plan gets forgotten about in the daily activities of your life.

I find that my husband and I do this a lot. ‘We should take a trip there.’ ‘We should try that new restaurant.’ ‘We should go hiking more.’ ‘We should go camping.’ We are should-ing all over ourselves (I feel like that is a quote from somewhere, but I cannot remember where it is from). A few weeks or months go by and I suddenly remember the activity that we should have done already and I say to my husband, “Awe, we should have done that! Why didn’t we?”

‘Why didn’t we’ indeed! I am going to start implementing what I call Monthy Fun Goals and would love for you to join me! Each month I am going to make a list of a couple of fun outings or activities for that month and then SCHEDULE them! That is the part of the equation that I think a lot of us leave out. We find something that we would enjoy doing or would like to experience but the majority of the time we do not act on it. We let it slip our minds instead of being proactive and bringing out the calendar and putting pen to paper.

Self-improvement should be about boosting all areas of your life including fun experiences. Experiencing new places, meeting different people, and trying other hobbies can help build your character. It can help broaden your mindset and your skillset and even uncover some hidden talents or passions you didn’t know you had. It can even help improve your confidence because you will get to learn more about yourself and have more life experiences behind you.

I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to hide out in my comfort zone and by comfort zone, I mean me on my couch with my dogs in sweatpants and a hoodie (yes, even in the summer). And meeting new people scares the bejeezus (oh, Chandler) out of me. I have this weird tendency to make every human interaction I have with an unknown person feel uncomfortable and awkward… go figure.

You can read more about my comfort zone and creating better habits here.

Staying stagnant and not progressing in life by not participating in new experiences is, in the long run, scarier than feeling awkward for a little bit. Maybe by the act of participating, that awkwardness and uncomfortableness will eventually go away (or at least lessen a bit, I’m really awkward you guys).

Monthly Fun Goals will be a tool to not only help to incorporate fun activities and hobbies into your routine. But also a tool to break away from the comfort zone – a way to challenge ourselves and grow in a fun and exciting way!

Fun Goals can be whatever you want. They do not have to be extravagant or costly adventures. They can be simple things you’ve always wanted to try.

I would love for you to follow me and post your Fun Goals for the month in the comments as well! I would really love to know what goals you come up with and how they go! So, don’t forget to tag me in any pictures of you accomplishing your Fun Goals!

This is so cool. I want to start incorporating fun into my monthly goals and plans too. There are actually some cool books about the science behind what “play” does to our psyche and how it improves our lives. And yet I forget to prioritize it. Thanks for writing this!

I love this idea! I definitely need to focus on having fun more, and I may need to create some goals to make that actually happen.

Thanks! Yes, planning is key. If I don’t write it down in a calendar, I usually forget about it haha!

Love this idea. I’m more inclined to stay home but I try and take the kids out to do something new and fun. Pushing past our comfort zone is a lot easier when you have someone to do it with, right?
