Classic dresses for summer. Summer is right around the corner. There is nothing easier or more comfortable to wear (oh hello breeze) during those hot summer months than a dress.
They are versatile and can be worn for just about any occasion. Heading to the beach? Throw on your dress as a cover-up and then when everyone is ready to go grab some food, throw it back on and you’re ready to go.
I have put together some classic summer dresses that, in my opinion, never go out of style. From ethereal white dresses to button-front shirt dresses, these are my go-to summer dresses from sustainable and ethical brands.
There is a little something in here for everyone. The floor-length floral lover and the simplistic minimalist, there is a dress in here for you.
There are three types of dresses every summer wardrobe needs white & lacey, tank and shirt dresses, and floral.
White & Lacey
The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of summer dresses is a flowy, white, and lacey dress. I just think they are so beautiful and timeless. I imagine strolling through a field of tall grass at golden hour wearing a long white dress blowing on a dandelion flower. What? I’ve seen too many romance movies? No such thing.
Jessica Broderie Dress
The Jessica Broderie Dress from People Tree is a beautifully sweet and simple dress that I totally envision being worn to a picnic… or clambake… whatever that is… does it involve clams?
The Isidore Dress from Sezane is gorgeous! I love the relaxed sleeves, front buttons, and pleated skirt. It looks like a dress that could be worn to a more formal summer gathering but still be comfortable. You could wear it as is with the matching belt, or swap it for some added contrast.
Not lacey, but still a beautiful white dress from Christy Dawn. I love the tiered skirt and the puff short sleeves. Relaxed enough for everyday wear but elegant enough for a summer outdoor event.
This stunning dress from Reformation is definitely a statement piece with the plunging neckline. I absolutely adore this dress. This the epitome of a white, lacey summer dress.
Tank & Shirt
Tank and Shirt dresses are perfect for summer. They are an easy and comfortable addition to your summer wardrobe and are perfect for those super hot and sweaty days.
Fit and Flare Midi Dress
Fit and Flare Tank Dress
Pact Apparel has some great tank dresses. They are made with organic cotton so you know they are going to be comfortable and they have pockets! Need I say more? They have several colors and print options for both of these style tank dresses.
Jersey Knit Shirt Dress
This dress from Backcountry looks so comfortable. I actually just ordered this dress myself and I cannot wait for it to come in! I love how simplistic and effortless this dress looks. This is definitely an every day, live-in dress. Update – I got this dress in the dark, gray-blue color and I have already worn it so much. It is so comfortable and I absolutely love the pockets!
The Nonna + The Penny
The Nonna Dress (left) and The Penny Dress (right) from Fauxgerty are great basic tank dresses to have in your closet. A fitted tank dress can be really flattering and so easy to dress up or down.
I love this button-front shirt dress from Madewell. You know I love me a button-front anything! The loose fit would keep you nice and cool on those summer days.
If you are looking for a dressier shirtdress option, this pinstripe one is super cute. This would look great with a belt for a more fitted look or worn as is for a relaxed, got-this-from-my-man’s-closet vibe.
Classic tank dress from Madewell. Love the sunny yellow!
Floral dresses are your classic summer dress print. Everything is in full bloom and the colors are bright and happy.
This sweet and pretty dress from Sezane has everything I want in a floral dress. Short sleeve, button-front, and flattering v-neck. The print if this dress is lovely with all the different color flowers.
Reformation always has the most feminine and stylish dresses and the Alison Dress is no exception. This dress would make a great summer date-night outfit. It comes in two prints and I think I am leaning more towards the green!
Like Reformation, Christy Dawn has so many feminine, twirl-worthy summer dresses. I love the fitted bodice of The Basil Dress and the loose, flowy 3/4 sleeves and skirt.
For my friends out there who are not about the floral dress life, here a few other really cute patterned summer dresses.
I love the polka dot pattern of The Bonnie Dress. Another great summer dress from Christy Dawn. Maybe it’s advertising like this that implants the vision of me walking in fields wearing dresses into my mind… I’m not mad at it.
I love this tiered dress by Madewell and the yellow stripes are total summer vibes! Easy and breezy, perfect for summer.
Ingrid Olive Dress
The olive tree inspired print of this dress from People Tree is so unique and the off the shoulder style is so cute for summer.
The paint splotch print on this Esmerelda Dress from Reformation is so fun and colorful. The dress is so gorgeous and flattering with the wrap style and the puff shoulder sleeve.
I hope you fell in love with some of these summer dresses. I hope they inspired you to take a slow-motion stroll through some tall grass at sunset while wearing one of them 🙂 . Let me know which one is your favorite!
